Arkanines: Flo Best

Flo Best, Arkanines
Meet Flo!  This sweet girl was born in Tijuana, Mexico, but migrated to the US when she was just 2-months-old to pursue better professional opportunities. Flo enjoys chasing her tail, barking at chipmunks, and sweeping the floor with her tongue. Although they believe she will not be winning any dog contests soon, her family loves her very much.  Flo belongs to Dr. Best (who totally wrote this bio).

IgA Differential

IgA, IgA Differential, IgA nephropathy
IgA nephropathy is defined by IgA dominant or co-dominant deposits in glomeruli in the absence of systemic disease. Other diseases commonly described in association with this histopathology include Henoch Schönlein purpura, infection (particularly S. aureus), inflammatory bowel disease, and cirrhosis. It has also been reported as an incidental finding in autopsy studies.

Lab Robots

Robots at arkana laboratories helping with staining for kidney biopsy
Friendly robots help anatomic pathology laboratories maintain high quality and efficiency!  Laboratories began introducing automation technology on a large scale only recently (during the 1970s and 1980s), borrowing heavily from the lessons learned in the manufacturing industry.  Targeted use of automation is best suited for routine, repetitive processes such as staining large numbers of slides!  Genzen JR, et al.  Challenges and Opportunities in Implementing Total Laboratory Automation. LECT2 Amyloidosis

LECT2 Amyloidosis, tubulointerstitial and vascular deposition of a PAS-pale
The renal biopsy from this 79-year-old Hispanic male shows extensive glomerular, tubulointerstitial and vascular deposition of a PAS-pale (Fig 1), non-argyrophilic (Fig 2) and Congo red positive (Fig 3) amorphous material which shows apple green birefringence upon polarization, consistent with amyloid deposits. The amyloid deposits show no light chain restriction on immunofluorescence and electron microscopy shows numerous small, non-branching, overlapping fibrils within the glomeruli, interstitium, and vessels. An AA amyloid immunoperoxidase stain is negative; however, staining for LECT2 amyloid is strongly and diffusely positive (Fig 4). The aforementioned morphologic findings are characteristic of LECT2 amyloidosis. Although described relatively recently, it...
