A MYMP For Membranous Lupus Nephritis

Membranous Lupus Nephritis, arkana laboratories, nephropathology
Dr. Caza and Dr. Kuperman (along with Dr. Sharma, Dr. Dvanajscak, and Dr. Larsen), recently published a paper covering membranous lupus nephritis. Read the paper: Neural Cell Adhesion Molecule 1 Is A Novel Autoantigen in Membranous Lupus Nephritis Tune in next week to see who will catch the MYMP!

Lipid Storage Myopathy

Lipid Storage Myopathy, Arkana Laboratories, neuro notes, neuropathology, molecular pathology
This adult patient presented with progressive muscle weakness, elevated CK, and was admitted for rhabdomyolysis. Skeletal muscle biopsy was performed of the quadriceps (Image 1, Hematoxylin and eosin-stained frozen section, original magnification x200). What is your diagnosis?                                                                                                ...

Twitter Poll (October 14, 2020)

Exostosin, arkana laboratories, autoimmune diseases, renal pathology
Answer: D Exostosin is an antigen that was recently identified out of a cohort of Phospholipase A2 Receptor (PLA2R) and Thrombospondin Type-1 Domain-Containing 7A (THSD7A) negative cases of Membranous GN. Results showed that EXT1/2 positive cases were associated with autoimmune disease, including systemic lupus erythematosus (see reference).   Reference: Sethi S, Madden BJ, Debiec H, et al. Exostosin 1/Exostosin 2-Associated Membranous Nephropathy. J Am Soc Nephrol 2019; 30(6): 1123-1136.

Diffuse Astrocytoma IDH-Mutant

brain biopsy, Diffuse Astrocytoma IDH-Mutant, neuro notes, neuropathology
The field of neuropathology is currently in a state of exponential growth and increased understanding of the pathogenesis of brain tumors, which has been heralded in the literature by the Consortium to Inform Molecular and Practical Approaches to CNS Tumor Taxonomy, Not Official WHO (cIMPACT-NOW) working groups.  For example, in this case of a diffusely infiltrating glioma in an adult patient, MRI neuroimaging shows mild T2 hyperintensity and increased FLAIR signal in the left parietal-occipital lobes with extension across the midline at the genu of the corpus callosum (Figures 1 and 2, respectively).  Stereotactic brain biopsy with neuronavigation yields hypercellular...

amyloidosis, AL-type, immunofluorescence in renal pathology, kidney biopsy, congo red stain, Arkana Laboratories
What is at the top of your differential in a patient with a positive SPEP (IgG kappa) and the immunofluorescence finding below? (hint: lambda is negative)                                                                                                               ...

Dr. Kellen Dawson (PGY3) is associate chief resident in the pathology residency program at UAMS. She spent the last two weeks with Dr. Messias and our other physicians learning pearls of renal pathology!

Pituitary Gland

pituitary adenoma, pituitary gland tumor, arkana laboratories, neuro notes, neuropathology
Using the Wilder's reticulin special silver stains, can you spot which image shows pathologic change in this endoscopic transnasal transsphenoidal resection of a pituitary gland tumor?                                                                                                               ...
