2022 Art of Medicine Competition
Welcome to the first Art of Medicine competition!
This competition is dedicated to those who love kidneys and art. Pathologists, nephrologists, and residents alike can submit diagnostic images, paintings, drawings, digital art, sculptures, or any other media focused on renal pathology. Those participating are encouraged to interpret their definition of renal pathology in a creative way that highlights the field.
Why are we hosting an art competition?
The Art of Medicine competition works to connect artistic expression with a vital part of Arkana’s mission, advancing the understanding of disease through education. The cases we receive daily are people, and art is an expression of those people and the medical challenges they face. By looking through a different lens, we hope that this art competition will connect the expression of art with Arkana’s passion for teaching.
There are three categories for the Art of Medicine competition. Any entry must be related to renal pathology. No cancerous renal material, oncopathology, or oncology, will be considered, including malignant tumors or diseases.
Entry must contain a diagnostic image of a pathologic renal entity. Any diagnostic image using any renal stain may be allowed including immunofluorescence assays.
Paintings and Illustrations
Materials such as watercolors, acrylic paint, chalk, pencil/pen, or any other material used to create a painting or illustration may be used. Digital illustrations are also allowed. The painting or illustration must resemble kidney pathology in some way.
Materials used to create mixed media art may include, but are not limited to, cloth, paper, wood, and other materials. Assemblages, collages, and sculptures are common examples. Any medium is allowed.
Our judges will review each entry to the competition. There is no specific criteria for determining a winner. Our judges will use their knowledge of renal pathology and their own criteria as a base for their top selections. Below are our judges!
