The photomicrograph shows numerous atheroemboli within vascular spaces on renal biopsy. Atheroemboli can be a cause of renal ischemia and acute renal failure and are often associated with vascular instrumentation or in patients with severe atherosclerosis such as an abdominal aortic aneurysm.
